Supreme Court Hears First Case
The new UK Supreme Court hears its first case today. The Court, which is housed in Middlesex Guildhall opposite the Houses of Parliament, will be the highest judicial body in the UK. It assumes the jurisdiction of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords and certain matters relating to devolution that were heard by the Privy Council. Lord Phillips, previously the Senior Law Lord, has become the first President of the Supreme Court. The Court’s first case relates to a challenge to the freezing of assets of several individuals suspected of terrorism.
