Asset-Seizing Powers Extended

The Proceeds of Crime Act, which allows assets of organised criminals to be seized, is to be extended to cover minor offences. Bodies such as Transport for London and the Royal Mail are to be granted powers to seize assets for such offences. The extension by statutory instrument is highly controversial as the power was originally intended to be used against serious organised crime only. The powers are currently used by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (replacing the Assets Recovery Agency). See further:
